Valencia Trip Added to Preseason

A visit to Spain will round out Arsenal’s preseason matches this summer, as the Gunners will travel to the Mestalla for a friendly with Valencia on Saturday, August 8.

The match will come one week after another La Liga team plays Arsenal, with Atletico Madrid set to face the Gunners on the opening day of the Emirates Cup on August 1.

While Atletico Madrid has qualified for this season’s Champions League play-in rounds, Valencia finished sixth in La Liga this past season and will compete in the 2009-10 UEFA Cup, which has been rebranded for upcoming seasons as the Europa League.

With Valencia CF currently in some financial trouble, it will be interesting to see if current stars such as David Villa and David Silva are still with the club by the time Arsenal make the trip to Spain for their final summer tuneup.

The Gunners begin the preseason on July 18, with an afternoon kickoff against Barnet at Underhill, before a July 20 encounter at Lincoln City that will feature mainly players from Arsenal’s reserves and youth teams.

Next on Arsenal’s preseason schedule (as of this time) is a trip to Germany to face Hannover on July 29 in a mid-week encounter before returning home to host the Emirates Cup.

In addition to the Madrid side, this year’s edition of the annual competition includes Paris Saint-Germain and Scottish club Rangers. After facing Atletico in the second Saturday match of the Emirates Cup, the Gunners will end the competition by facing Rangers in an all-British matchup on Sunday, August 2.
