Details For 2009 Emirates Cup

In news relating to a trophy that Arsenal has won recently, the teams and schedule for the 2009 Emirates Cup have been officially announced, with Atletico Madrid, Paris-Saint Germain (PSG) and Glasgow Rangers confirmed to visit the Emirates the first weekend of August for the Gunners’ annual pre-season tournament.

Having hosted successful affairs the last two summers (and capturing the competition trophy in 2007), Arsenal will again welcome some top European clubs to North London. A doubleheader of games is set for Saturday, August 1 and also for Sunday, August 2 (with one ticket giving fans access to both matches being played on that day.)

The opening encounter on 2 p.m. August 1 will see Rangers play PSG, followed by host Arsenal against Spanish side Atletico Madrid at 4:15 p.m. Sunday’s matches begin with PSG and Atletico Madrid squaring off at 2 p.m., before Arsenal and Rangers meet at 4:15 p.m. to conclude this year’s Emirates Cup.

Offering the first opportunity for most supporters to see the Arsenal squad ahead of the 2009-10 season, the Emirates Cup will again showcase some high-profile international players as the four clubs compete for the preseason prize.

Teams will be awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and will also earn one point for each goal scored in the competition. The winners will be presented with the Emirates Cup trophy after the scond match on Sunday, August 2.

“We are delighted to be once again hosting the Emirates Cup in August 2009,” chief executive Ivan Gazidis told arsenal.com. “Atletico Madrid, Rangers and Paris Saint-Germain all have great pedigree and will contribute to an exciting weekend of pre-season football.”
